Gerhard Richter Archive Exhibition

Invitation card from the Gerhard Richter Archive

Today, I’ve received an invitation from the Gerhard Richter Archive in Dresden, where I worked before I came to Canada. Thanks! They have a new exhibition called “Gerhard Richter. Editionen, Entwürfe, Briefe, Materialien” on view, which focuses on Richter’s graphic work. The exhibition title translates like “Gerhard Richter. Editions, Designs, Letters, Materials”.

The very unique invitation depicts a letter from Gerhard Richter to his gallerist August Haseke from February 3rd, 1969. In it, the famous German painter gives instructions regarding the printing process, including specifications not only on design, but also on paper and ink.

Since the 1960s, German painter Gerhard Richter has created an extensive and versatile graphic oeuvre in addition to his painterly work. These prints, photographic editions, artist's books, artist's posters and multiples have been an integral part of his artistic work. The exhibition in Dresden shows his editions from 1968 to 2019.

Thanks so much for inviting me - I just wish I could go!

From the web site of the archive:

The Gerhard Richter Archive

The Gerhard Richter Archive is intended as a centre for research and communication concerning the works of this artist and as such it collects and documents all books, catalogues, journals and articles, photographs, videos and CDs that are published about Gerhard Richter or contain relevant information and contributions about him and his artistic context. An important section of the Archive’s holdings contains unpublished writings and documents, correspondence and photographs.

Alex Janvier’s "The Seasons"

The Seasons, 1978, acrylic on canvas, by Alex Janvier, at the Canadian Museum of History
Sometimes you encounter art in unexpected places. I wasn’t aware of the fact that the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau (which also holds the Children’s Museum) is home to one of Alex Janvier’s major works: The Seasons.

In 1978, it was actually commissioned by the Canadian Museum of Civilization, as it was called then.

I first saw Alex Janvier’s impressive work in his retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada in 2018. He was born in the Le Goff Reserve, Cold Lake First Nations, northern Alberta, in 1935, and is one of the most important aboriginal artists in Canada.

Another work by Alex Janvier on view at the Canadian Museum of History: Morning Star, which is installed in the dome of the Haida Gwaii Salon. This mural rises seven stories above the salon and covers 418 square-meters according to the museum’s web site.

Earth Day Celebrations Today

Today is Earth Day!

Here in Ottawa, Wall Space Gallery celebrates Earth Day 2019 with a new exhibition of Stefan Thompson's and Jordan Seal's works; and today the gallery hosts its Earth Day Celebrations, including live painting performances and material demonstrations.

Stefan Thompson's and Jordan Seal's techniques are influenced by the findings of modern chemistry and ancient practices. Both Thompson and Seal explore painting, sculpture, and installation using solely eco-friendly materials that are non-new, non-toxic and renewable. A very interesting and timely approach, in my opinion.
